GRÜNDERIN und GRÜNDER des Musik Theater Heidelberg (English below)

Carola Cribari

Geboren in New York. Bereits mit vier Jahren stand sie mit ihren beiden älteren Schwestern auf der Bühne und sang. Mit elf verliebte sie sich in Puccinis Madame Butterfly und diese erste Liebe sollte ab da ihr Leben bestimmen. Ihr Bachelor in Klavier und Musik am Manhattanville College ermöglichte ihr das Studium bei dem Pianisten William Harms, seinerseits ein Schüler des weltberühmten Josef Hofmann.
Ihren Master machte sie in Gesang an der Columbia Universität.

Als junge Sängerin, in ihrer ersten Rolle der Tosca in New York, traf sie den Bariton Edoardo Assali, der den Scarpia sang.

Sie heirateten und zogen nach Deutschland, wo beide ihr Leben ihren Karrieren widmeten.

Es folgten Engagements und Konzerte in den USA, in Deutschland und in Italien.

Nach der Geburt ihrer Tochter Carla gründeten sie und ihr Mann 1985 das Musik Theater Heidelberg. Seitdem hat sie viele Produktionen geleitet und die Musik dafür komponiert.

Die Stadt Heidelberg hat diese Produktionen seit 1991 unterstützt und Carola Cribari damit die einzigartige Chance gegeben, mehr als 30 Jahre lang ihre Produktionen zu schaffen.
Dafür ist sie unendlich dankbar.

Edoardo Assali

Geboren in Montreal in Kanada widmete er seine ersten Jahre der visuellen Kunst.

Dann entdeckte ein Dirigent seine außergewöhnlich schöne Stimme und unterstützte ihn mit Rollen in verschiedenen Opern-Produktionen.

Ed verließ Kanada um in Italien neue Chancen für seine Sänger-Karriere zu suchen.

Auf dem Weg dorthin machte er Halt in England und lernte zufällig einen Filmagenten kennen, der ihm Rollen in etlichen bekannten Filmen in London verschaffte.

Als er schließlich in Italien ankam, studierte er Gesang mit verschiedenen italienischen Meistern, aber seinen Erfolg verdankte er schließlich nicht deren Ratschlägen, sondern seinem eigenen natürlichen Talent und Instinkt für den Gesang.

Er kehrte zurück nach New York und sang in verschiedenen Opernhäusern, unter anderem in der New York City Oper.

Er traf Carola Cribari in seiner Rolle als Scarpia in Tosca. Sie heirateten und zogen nach Deutschland, wo Ed Verträge in Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Flensburg und Osnabrück hatte.

Sein Erfolg in der Titelrolle des Woyzeck ist in Heidelberg immer noch legendär.

Schließlich kehrte er zu seinem ursprünglichen Talent als Künstler zurück und schuf großartige Bühnenbilder und Kostüme für das Musik Theater, das er und seine Frau gegründet hatten.

Er starb 2018 im Alter von 90 Jahren. Bis zwei Wochen vor seinem Tod hat er gesungen, mit seinem schönen Bariton, dem das Alter nichts hatte anhaben können.

THE FOUNDERS of MusikTheater Heidelberg

Carola Cribari

Born in New York. She was already  singing onstage with her two older sisters at age four. At the age of 11 she fell in love with Puccini‘s Madame Butterfly and the course of her life was determined by that first love.
Her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano at Manhattanville College made it possible for her to study with pianist William Harms, a student of the world famous pianist Josef Hofmann.

Thereafter she attained her Masters degree in voice from Columbia University.

As a young singer, in her first role of Tosca in New York City she met her husband, baritone Edoardo Assali who sang the role of Scarpia.

They married and moved to Germany where their lives were dedicated to their careers. Engagements  and concerts followed in the United States, Germany and Italy.

After the birth of their daughter, Carla, she and husband Edoardo Assali founded the MusikTheater Heidelberg in 1985. Since then she has been directing and composing the music for many of the productions. 

The city of Heidelberg has been supporting these productions yearly since 1991.

This support has been a unique opportunity for Carola Cribari to create music theater productions for more than three decades. Her response to this is only gratitude.

Edoardo Assali

Born in Montreal Canada, his first years were dedicated to being an visual artist.

A conductor discovered that Ed had an unusually beautiful voice and mentored him by  casting him in various opera productions.

Ed then left Canada for Italy to seek out more opportunities for his singing career.

On the way he stopped in England where by chance he came to know a film agent who cast  him in various well known films made in London.

When he finally reached Italy he studied voice with various Italian maestros, but his successes came not from his teachers advice but from his own natural talent  and instinct for singing

He returned to New York and sang in several opera houses, among them the New York City Opera.

He met Carola Cribari while performing Scarpia in Tosca.They married and moved to Germany where Ed had various contracts in Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Flensburg, Osnabrück.

His success in the title role of Wozzeck is still legendary in Heidelberg.

He eventually returned to his first talent as an artist, creating gorgeus sets and costumes for the Music Theater he and his wife founded.

He died in 2018 at the age of 90 but was singing up to two weeks before his death,

his beautiful baritone sound unchanged by age.

CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS

Our daughter Carla Cribari-Assali

From the age of 5 on she has perfomed in our Theater until her move to Michigan in 2015. Her ideas and advice as my Regie Assistant  were and are invaluable...even to this day.

Donna M Cribari

has worked as composer, musical director, conductor and accompanist for countless productions with Off-Broadway, Regional Theater, community, and college groups.

For her original compositions she has been the recipient of numerous ASCAP Awards and 2 Meet the Composer Grants.

Among her original works are full length musicals:

Thomas J., Rockwell, Seasons, Rapunzel, LifeSongLoveSong, Flashbacks, and more than two hundred songs, and choral pieces.  Her Mass of Celebration for Mixed Chorus, Brass Quintet and Organ has been performed on several occasions at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and often in many churches.

As an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music and Theatre Arts at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC for over 35 years, she composed Incidental Music for Main Stage productions, among them: The Lucky Chance, The Winter’s Tale, Arcadia, Camille.

Recent compositions include: Incidental Music for plays: The Laramie Project, The Crucible, August, Osage County; Dance pieces: Ascent; Pavane; Bottom Line, I Really Love You; The Gentle Lark, a concert opera based on the life of singer, Ellabelle Davis;

a film score for Mary and the Silent Movie, produced by On the Isle, Nantucket, MA,;

a dance/theater piece Why I Live at the Post Office produced summer 2022 off-Broadway, NYC; and music composed specially for  Musik Theatre Heidelberg.

Johannes Vogt

studierte klassische Gitarre und Musikwissenschaft in Heidelberg sowie Laute und Klassische Gitarre in Aachen.

In Konzerten und bei CD-Produktionen ist er ein gefragter Musiker für die Instrumente Laute, Theorbe und historische Gitarre.

Besonderes Interesse zeigt er an der Musik der Renaissance und des Frühbarock sowie an improvisierter Musik in verschiedenen Ensembles zwischen Jazz und „Weltmusik“.

Als Lautenist ist er gefragt bei der Aufführung von Barockopern, bei modernen Opern als E-Gitarrist.

Er war Lehrbeauftragter für Laute und Generalbass-Spiel an der Musikhochschule Heidelberg-Mannheim (1992-1999) und für Gitarre an der Fachhochschule für Musiktherapie Heidelberg (1998-2001).
